@James,

Good point about the cold glass drawing heat away from the extraction. I'll have to try your suggestion.

Thanks for the tip.

Re: Deborah,

You can save yourself the need to dry the press beaker if you just pour the scalding water on the outside. It will still heat the glass, but keeps the inside dry. I don't pre-heat the metal screen because the amount of heat it can draw from the brew is minimal.

The glass, on the other hand, can draw enough heat to noticeably reduce the temperature of the final brew (which would mean it's also affecting the extraction process).

Although the glass does insulate the brew during the extraction process, insulation only means that it prevents heat loss *across* the glass to the surrounding air outside the press pot. It doesn't mean that the glass itself absorbs no heat. You're still losing heat out of the brew that goes into heating the glass if you start with a cold press pot.

I realize this article is a few months old, but I too am a fan of the Vietnamese coffee filter and thought I'd share a tip for keeping the coffee hot for longer.

I read a tip somewhere from a long-time user of the device - place a slightly wide bowl under the cup you're brewing the coffee into.

When you're heating up the water for the filter, heat extra and pour that into the bowl just enough to cover the bottom 1/3 or 1/2 of the cup.

It is, of course, not the perfect solution since it will cool down just the same as the water you're brewing with, but it's hardly any additional work, and may keep the coffee at a hotter temperature for when you're ready to drink it!

Deborah,

Interesting idea. May actually help a bit to assist the infusion at the proper temperature in the press.

With a French press, the glass beaker tends to hold the heat in during the 4-5 minute steep time. Sort of an insulating effect that prevents heat from escaping while the coffee steeps.

Not sure the Vietnamese coffee filter would keep the coffee warmer by pre-heating, but worth a try.

Here is a low tech way to keep your French pressed coffee from dropping a couple of degrees: pour scalding water into the press receptacle and replace the filter/plunger to warm the parts before making your coffee. Be sure to dry the receptacle thoroughly before placing the ground beans in. Not sure how the Vietnamese coffee maker works, but perhaps the parts can be warmed with hot water before starting the process.
